Having been in Dr. Jim Pershing's class I am familiar with the feelings of loss he must have felt for Jana. I myself lost a dear friend this year and also a family member so I am feeling loss as well. But we hope these loved ones go to a better place. Wish you all peace.

I met Jana in September of 2006 while we were both living in Kansas City, MO. When we first met it was like I had known her forever. I was instantly drawn to her gentle voice and her silly sense of humor and I can still remember what she looked like when she laughed! When we were in Kansas City we had several major snowstorms and I would frequently see Jana and Dan walking hand in hand through the apartment community where we lived. Their love for each other was so very deep and very special and I sensed that the minute I saw them together. I am so honored that I had the opportunity to meet Jana and am so proud to call her my friend. I love you Jana.

Erika Rutherford, RN, BSN, CHPN added this message on August 2, 2010:

I feel fortunate to have recently crossed paths with Jana and Dan. From the moment I met them, I was awestruck by their immense respect and complete devotion to one another. Although I was saddened to learn Jana had traded in her earthly body, I am happy believing she has entered a new city, and a new life.

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just above where the sea and the sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says, "There, she is gone!" "Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is able to bear the load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not her. And just at that moment when someone at my side says "There she is gone!" There are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout "Here she comes!"
And that is dying.

Love, peace and blessings to you both

Although I did not have a chance to meet Dr. Jana Pershing face to face, I had known her through her academic works. Professor Jana Pershing was a great scholar, and all students using content analysis as their research methodology including me in our field, Human Performance Technology are greatly indebted to her. Her articles and the chapter of the HPT handbook are really valuable guidelines for my research. Thank you very much, Dr. Jana Pershing.

I did not personally know Jana, just know of her life through this site. I am so happy to know that she lived among us,but now even after her passing...is still touching strangers, and making our (my) life more meaningful. This site allowed us to view a woman's life that was full of love and adventure, more so than most of us could ever even imagine in our own life. I want to thank you for sharing Jana's life with us (me).

Amy Petri added this message on August 2, 2010:

I met Jana almost 20 years ago when we both arrived in Seattle for graduate school at the University of Washington. I think we both felt a bit like fish out of water - me from Texas and Jana from Indiana - but we had an instant bond that saw us through the challenges of graduate school, discovering a new city (and adapting to the climate - hello gray skies and rain!), and being far away from anything familiar. She was someone that I quickly came to appreciate for her quirky sense of humor, her ability to listen and never pass judgment, and her brutal honesty at the times that I needed it. I left UW after 3 years, but our friendship didn't end there - and even after she relocated to San Diego and our talks became more infrequent, we always managed to pick up things right where we left off whenever we did talk. She never forgot my birthday, hers was always the first Christmas card I got each year, and hers was a friendship that involved sharing the highs and lows of life. I love that she never candy-coated anything, always held true to what she believed, and was one of the hardest working and toughest people I know. She was also one of the most loyal and kindest of friends. It truly feels like a chapter of my life has come to a close - I will miss her dearly.

Jana and I went to school together at Bloomington North. Jana was a beautiful person, even then. At a time when people were so caught-up in unimportant things like clothes, cars, and other sillinesses, Jana knew who she was. She was brilliant. I will always envy her for her quiet confidence and strength of character!

I only met Jana once, at my husband's chiropractic office in Bonita, CA. I was drawn to her at first because we share a name that is fairly uncommon. She was obviously an intelligent person and attractive and seemed to me to be someone I could have been friends with had we met under other circumstances. When I read her obituary this week I was so sad to learn she had died. I join her friends and family in praying for her eternal rest and offer my condolences to her loved ones.

I had the privilege to be one of Jana's doctors. Over the years we developed a special relationship that I will not forget. I watched her so bravely face her health challenges head on and with great determination. But most of all I will always remember the beautiful heart that she has. I was fortunate in that she was able to open up to me and share her self in a way that was healing for both of us. I know how special it must be to have been one of her close relatives or friends. I know, Dan, how thankful you must feel to have been that special ONE in her life. I know she loved you very much.

Although I only met Jana and Dan twice over the last six months, I became very involved with them over difficult decisions and came to greatly admire their bravery and deep dedication to each other. It was a privilege to know this remarkable woman. The only solace there is the peace I hope Jana has found.
