Andrew Harnett added this message on July 30, 2010:

Jana had a dramatic influence on how I saw the world. She raised questions that I had never considered and brought what seemed like age old wisdom to our interactions when in fact we were nearly the same age. In the seven years we spent together she played a huge part in my changing from being a full grown boy to being a young man. I will always be indebted to her for helping me grow into a more complete person.

During the few conversations I had with Jana over the last year and particularly one only a little before her passing I was amazed that she sounded as if it was any normal day in her life from ten years ago. The lilt of her voice and immediate laughter were just as I always remembered despite the knowledge that she was enduring severe pain every minute of her time. Given Jana's strength and candid manner in some ways this is not surprising since she has always been someone who within a few sentences after not speaking for a year I would feel as if we had been talking on a daily basis. Jana

You were out changing the world

Just like we all knew you would

In a field that desperately needed your insight

Then this

A harsh reminder for us to make the most of every single day

And further proof that life is, indeed, not fair at all.

Thank you

I only knew Professor Pershing for one semester, (her last semester, Sociology of Murder) but it was apparent that she was a very wise woman. I enjoyed her class and am grateful that I had the opportunity to be her student!!

I knew Jan while we attend Bloomington High School North. I did not see Jan after high school but have fond memories of her. She worked closely with my father Martin Weinberg at Indiana University and he often spoke about her and shared stories. She will be missed.

We had the privilege to know Jana and even have her cook for us. She was a very special lady a very interesting person to know as well. We even had some good memories with her, and so I'm thankful she and Dan had a love and memories that will be with him forever. You did a great job son, we are very proud of you.

Deborah Petersen added this message on July 29, 2010:

I never had the pleasure of meeting Jana personally, but rather through phone and e-mail. Our relationship was focused on her illness, but I could sense her strong desire to heal herself and continue her life's journey. I am saddened to hear of her passing.
