Academic Archive

To say that Jana excelled in the academic environment would be a massive understatement. Below are a few items I wanted to preserve and share with people who never had the privilege to take a class with Professor Pershing, or to read one of her many publications. While at SDSU she created the department's most popular class, Murder in America (later retitled Sociology of Murder) as well as a class for graduate students on how to be an effective teacher.  As the one of the best teachers on campus, she was uniquely qualified.

Murder Lecture - Not the famous Last Lecture, but here is the powerpoint presentation Jana used during her last semester teaching in Spring of 2009. She had resisted powerpoint for many years, sticking to old school overhead transparencies or good ole' chalk.  But finally, in her last few months of teaching, she made the transition.

Most Cited Article - I won't attempt to explain Jana's article on snitching at the Naval Academy, only that her application of Neutralization Techniques in examining why some midshipmen snitch on their peers was a significant contribution to the sociological research on occupational misconduct.

Murder Class Poster

Marketing Material - Since Jana's murder class was not required, she often chose to market it with posters like this one.  Her 150-student lecture hall would have filled to capacity regardless.  Click to enlarge.

SDSU Website - Not sure how long Jana's webpage will remain on the SDSU website, so here is snapshot of that page.  Click to enlarge.
